There has been some misinformation spread in the media regarding changing the name of the Cooks River. The suggestion that the Cooks River Alliance (CRA) or its members may soon have a position on the naming of the river is factually incorrect.

The Cooks River Alliance (CRA) has no policy position on renaming the river nor does the Cooks River Alliance Aboriginal Community Partnership Strategy mention anything about renaming the river.  The proposal in the Alliance’s endorsed strategy is to consider renaming the Alliance, NOT the river. 

Out of respect for the river’s Aboriginal community, we would like to iterate the sensitivity of the issue around renaming the river. As such, we ask for people to be aware of the complicated history of the Cooks river and the impact this may have on individuals within the Aboriginal community.
