You are invited to join ecologist Carl Tippler to monitor the health of the Cooks River. Carl is a scientist who undertakes the monitoring program of the Cooks River and Georges River catchments. He is very knowledgeable about the catchment and its stressors. The sampling program focuses on macro-invertebrates. The range of ‘waterbugs’ present in a creek are a good indicator of the health of the stream. Come along to find out more. Saturday 17th May from 9am to 12noon Meet in the carpark of Bexley Swim Centre, Preddy’s Rd (off Stony Creek Rd) Bexley. (Nearby bus routes 446, 491, M41). Water Sampling Day Yarrowee Wetland

The Cooks River Alliance runs a catchment monitoring program in conjunction with the Georges River Combined Councils’ Committee. Water quality, vegetation along side of the creek or river are all monitored and recorded to provide an understanding of catchment health. Monitoring water quality allows us to understand how chemical pollutants, agricultural, industrial and urban runoff affects the structure and function of freshwater and estuarine ecosystems. You are invited to join ecologist Carl Tippler to record macro-invertebrates and learn more about water quality in the Cooks River. Please wear: hat, sunscreen, long trousers (preferable), closed-in shoes (at a minimum) or gum boots (preferable). Also bring along a water bottle. Cooks River Alliance will provide morning tea for the volunteers. Book your place (maximum 10 participants per session). Prior to the formation of the Cooks River Alliance, a number of projects were undertaken to improve the health of the Cooks River catchment. A key example is the the OurRiver project - the Cooks River Sustainability Initiative (OurRiver) was an initiative of the Cooks River Foreshores Working Group (CRFWG). OurRiver was a partnership between Ashfield, Bankstown City, City of Sydney, City of Canterbury, Hurstville City, Marrickville, Rockdale City and Strathfield councils, and Monash University. The project ran from 2007 to 2011 and was funded by the NSW Environmental Trust’s Urban Sustainability Program. OurRiver trialled an innovative planning model based on Marrickville Council’s award-winning Urban Stormwater Integrated Management (USWIM) project. The project was undertaken in six subcatchments across eight local government areas (LGAs). Subcatchment Management Plans were developed for the six OurRiver project areas. The plans include construction projects and education and policy initiatives.

Ashbury Subcatchment

Area: 102 hectares Population: 2,329 Location: The Subcatchment covers part of the suburb of Ashbury and includes sections of Lees and Peace Parks, Canterbury Park and Canterbury Park Racecourse (click here to see a map). Land use: The Subcatchment is mostly residential with a small number of shops, a racecourse, park areas and two schools. The suburb of Ashbury contains heritage conservation areas and has a significant amount of open space. This Subcatchment covers two local government areas - Ashfield (12ha) and Canterbury (90ha) (Canterbury Council has a second OurRiver subcatchment in its LGA - the Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment). Ashbury Subcatchment drains directly to the Cooks River and includes frontage onto a naturalised section of the River.

This Subcatchment covers two local government areas - Ashfield (12ha) and Canterbury (90ha) (Canterbury Council has a second OurRiver subcatchment in its LGA - the Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment). Vision Sessions and Planning Forum

The Our River team along with Ashfield and Canterbury Councils hosted a series of visioning sessions and a planning forum in 2008 for residents of the Ashbury Subcatchment. At the vision sessions and planning forum, residents were given an opportunity to create a future ‘2050' vision and work with Council to develop long term plans for their Subcatchment and the Cooks River.

The naturally flowing Cooks River supports a thriving ecosystem and is a place where people can enjoy the pleasure of water. Water and the environment are managed for future generations so that there is no need to worry."

Ashbury Subcatchment Management Plan Information and ideas developed by residents and other stakeholders at the vision sessions and planning forum were used to develop the Ashbury Subcatchment Mangement Plan. The Plan includes options for construction projects and education and policy initiatives to improve water management in the Subcatchment. The Ashbury Subcatchment Management Plan was formally endorsed by Ashfield (20/4/10) and Canterbury Councils (1/6/10).

Canterbury Park construction projects The options in the Subcatchment Management Plan include a stormwater/base flow harvesting and reuse project at Canterbury Park and the revegetation of a drainage swale between Blick and Campbell Ovals. In September and December 2010 local residents helped to add native plants to the drainage swale. The stormwater harvesting and reuse project at Canterbury Park will be completed in 2011. The project is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust through the OurRiver project and by the NSW Government's waste and sustainability improvement payments to Canterbury Council.

Community education projects The OurRiver team worked with Ashfield Council to develop and implement a number of community education initiatives including a Water Wise Tour of local sustainable water management sites, workshops about stormwater and waterways (including bi-lingual workshops), and developing stormwater drain markers with anti-pollution messages.

Rookwood Road Subcatchment

Area: 370 hectares Population: 2,265 Location: Rookwood Road Subcatchment covers parts of the suburbs of Potts Hill and Chullora and is bordered by the Hume Highway to the east and south; Avoca Street, Ashby Avenue, Brunker Road, Cooper Road to the west; and the northern sides of Potts Hill Reservoirs and the Chullora Railway Workshops to the north (Click here to see a map). Land use: The Subcatchment consists largely of commercial and industrial areas with a small residential pocket in the south of the Subcatchment. The Subcatchment contains the Potts Hill Reservoir which is surrounded by relatively large areas of green space. The head waters of the Cooks River, Freshwater Creek including Chullora Wetlands can also be found in the Subcatchment.

Rookwood Road Subcatchment Community Water Vision The Rookwood Road Subcatchment Planning Forum was held on the 28th of October 2009 at the Potts Hill Grey Hound Social Club. At the Forum residents and other stakeholders discussed water management issues within the Subcatchment and then developed goals and actions to reach the Rookwood Road Subcatchment community water vision for 2031.

Our parks are safe, accessible and sustainable living spaces that connect the community to each other and the environment around them. Our waterways are clean, rainwater and greywater are collected for reuse, and the community and other stakeholders work together to promote water conservation and recycling."

Graf Park Raingarden

Information and ideas developed by residents and other stakeholders at the 2009 Rookwood Road Community Planning Forum were used to develop the Rookwood Road Subcatchment Mangement Plan. The Plan includes a number of options for construction projects and education and policy initiatives to improve water management in the Subcatchment. As part of the OurRiver project Bankstown City Council have built a raingarden in Graf Park in Rookwood Road Subcatchment. Stormwater from the new car park and surrounding area will be directed to the raingarden where the plants, plant roots and soil will filter out pollution.

Munni Street Subcatchment

Area: 220 hectares Population: 14,024 Location: Munni Street Subcatchment is located in the City of Sydney. The Subcatchment is a defined area that includes parts of Alexandria, Darlington, Erskineville, Eveleigh and Newtown (Click here to see a map). Stormwater from this area flows into the Alexandra Canal which flows into the Cooks River near Sydney Airport. Land use: The Subcatchment is mostly residential with a light industrial area at the Ashmore precinct. Munni Street Subcatchment Management Plan

Information and ideas developed by residents and other stakeholders at the vision sessions and planning forum were used to develop the Munni Street Subcatchment Management Plan. The Plan includes options for construction projects and education and policy initiatives to improve water management in the Subcatchment. Concept designs developed as part of the planning process were used to inform the City of Sydney's upgrade of Lillian Fowler Reserve (located adjacent to Newtown Public School). An underground stormwater harvesting system and a raingarden are being included in the upgrade which will be completed in mid 2011. The Subcatchment Management Plan will be used to inform other capital works projects and water management initiatives in the Munni Street Subcatchment. A number of other initiatives were undertaken as part of the City of Sydney's involvement in the OurRiver project including a project to investigate how Water Sensitive Urban Design can be integrated into street tree plantings. The findings will be applied in Munni Street Subcatchment and the rest of the City of Sydney area.

Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment

Location: The Subcatchment covers the suburb of Kingsgrove and parts of Beverly Hills and Bexley North. The Subcatchment is bordered by Homer St to the north and Stoney Creek Road to the south. Sections of the M5 motorway and the East Hills railway line run through the Subcatchment.

Population: 10,175

Area: 437 hectares

Land use: The Subcatchment area has a variety of land uses which includes residential, commercial and industrial. There are also a number of park areas, schools and a railway station (Kingsgrove). This Subcatchment covers three local government areas which are Canterbury, Hurstville, and Rockdale. It is part of a bigger Wolli Creek Subcatchment which is the second largest Subcatchment of the Cooks River.

Vision Sessions and Planning Forum The Our River team along with Canterbury, Hurstville and Rockdale Councils hosted a series of visioning sessions and a planning forum in April and May 2009 for residents and other stakeholders of the Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment. Residents created a ‘2050′ vision and worked with council staff to develop long term plans for their local area and the Cooks River.

“In 2050 our community understands and is aware of the importance of water and energy conservation. Our public spaces and streets are clean and cared for by all. Waste and rubbish are no longer a problem.

Our catchment is planted with native vegetation and there are roadside gardens which clean the stormwater before it flows into Wolli Creek. The amount of stormwater that runs off the catchment is reduced through smarter urban design. Wolli Creek is safe to swim in again.

All our homes and buildings, including those used by industry, are sustainable and designed to capture, treat, store and reuse all water sources. Energy is generated locally from renewable resources to meet our communities demand.”

EC East Subcatchment

Area: 131 hectares Population: 7,661 Location: The Subcatchment covers parts of Enmore, Newtown and St Peters. It is bounded by Enmore Road to the north, Princes Highway to the south and King Street to the east. The western boundary of the Subcatchment cuts through the middle of Enmore Park (click here to see a map). Land use: The Subcatchment includes residential, commercial and industrial areas. A number of parks, schools and St Peters railway station can also be found within the Subcatchment. EC East Subcatchment adjoins the Munni Street Subcatchment. Part of the Subcatchment covers what was once part of the large Gumbramorra Swamp. The swamp was an important site for the Aboriginal people from the Cadigal and Wangal clans who lived around the Cooks River area prior to European settlement.

EC East Subcatchment Management Plan Information and ideas developed by residents and other stakeholders at the vision sessions and planning forum were used to develop the EC East Subcatchment Mangement Plan. The Plan includes a number of options for construction projects and education and policy initiatives to improve water management in the Subcatchment. The plan will be implemented by council in collaboration with the EC East Subcatchment Working Group (see details below). The Tom Foster Community Care's permeable car park As part of the OurRiver project Marrickville Council installed permeable paving at the Tom Foster Community Care’s car park. The permeable paving not only looks good but allows stormwater to infiltrate through the car park surface and to be removed by an underground sand filter before the stormwater enters the drain that will deliver it to the Cooks River. Permeable paving is not the first water sensitive urban design technique to be put into practice at Tom Foster Community Care - the centre harvests rainwater and uses it to flush the toilets. The centre is also used to host Council's sustainability workshops. Tom Foster Community Care is located at 11 Darley Street in Newtown in the EC East Subcatchment, swing by and have a look !

EC East Subcatchment Working Group The EC East Subcatchment working group meets to review the EC East Subcatchment Management Plan and prioritise the actions it contains. The EC East Subcatchment working group will come together to review the EC East Subcatchment Management Plan and prioritise the actions that are recommended in the Plan. The Plan is expected to be made available in August 2010 and a working group meeting will be scheduled sometime after August. The Cooks River Alliance is a partnership between eight councils in the Cooks River Catchment - Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville, Rockdale and Strathfield.

What We Do

The Alliance uses the combined resources, experience, knowledge and skills within the councils and the community to address the complex environmental problems of the Cooks River.

The Alliance helps its member councils achieve sustainable urban water management (SUWM) in the Cooks River Catchment through organisational capacity building, and partnership building with other councils, government agencies, community organisations and local people. Working together towards SUWM will provide social, organisational and physical benefits to the Cooks River Catchment, resulting in a healthy Cooks River in the long term. Alliance activities include: engaging with people living and working in the Cooks River Catchment, monitoring water quality, seeking funding, managing the construction of on-ground works, and advocating and lobbying for legislative amendments to help improve the health of the Catchment. The Alliance Management Plan, Action Plan, Annual Reports, and other governance documents are available on the Resources page.

Alliance Structure

The Alliance operates at three levels: Board, Executive Management, and Steering Committee.

The Board is the key governance and decision-making body of the Alliance. The Board is made up of one councillor from each member council.

The Executive Committee manages the Alliance Project Manager, monitors progress, and oversees composition of Board meeting agendas. The Executive Committee is made up of the Alliance Chair, Deputy Chair, a senior representative from the host council (Strathfield) and senior representatives from two other Cooks River Alliance councils.

The Steering Committee facilitates delivery of the Alliance Management and Action Plans, directs the work of the Alliance staff and action groups, and makes recommendations to the Alliance Board. The Steering Committee comprises at least one representative from each member council and all Alliance staff.

The Cooks River Alliance employs a small team to manage the day-to-day activities of the Alliance, drive the implementation of the Cooks River Alliance Management Plan and Action Plan, and to maximise the efficient use of member councils' limited resources.

Partners & Stakeholders

Each member council of the Alliance has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and has made a financial contribution to support the day-to-day running of the Alliance. Cooks River Alliance stakeholders are those people, groups and organisations who make decisions that affect the catchment on a day-to-day basis including residents, businesses, schools, utility companies, and government agencies.

Strathfield South Subcatchment

Area: 360 hectares Population: 2,989 Location: This Subcatchment includes parts of Belfield, Chullora, Greenacre and Strathfield South (click here to see map). The Subcatchment is bordered in the north by the Hume Highway, Roberts Rd to the west, Juno Parade and Punchbowl Rd in the south and the Cooks River itself to the east. Land use: Just over 50% of the Subctachment area is commercial and industrial. The proposed Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre site takes up about a quarter of the Subcatchment. The site will be developed by the Sydney Ports Corporation as a depot for the distribution of cargo containers against much local opposition. The Intermodal Logistics Centre site and a neighbouring industrial site both contain populations of the threatened Green and Golden Bell Frog. The rest of the Subcatchment area is made up of parks (mostly along the Cooks River and Cox's Creek) and two small residential areas.

Vision sessions and planning forum In 2008 the Our River team and Strathfield Council hosted a series of visioning sessions and a planning forum for Strathfield South Subcatchment residents and other stakeholders. At the vision sessions residents were given an opportunity to create a vision for water in their local area for 2050. At the planning forum residents, council staff and other stakeholders worked together to develop a list of goals and actions that would help achieve the 2050 community water vision. Drew Street raingardens As part of the OurRiver project Strathfield Council constructed two raingardens in Drew Street, Greenacre. A community planting day was held on Saturday 10th July 2010 for the raingardens (see photo below). The raingardens are the first in Strathfield LGA to be designed and constructed by Strathfield Council, and represent a significant achievement for all involved. The raingardens were funded by Strathfield Council, the NSW Environmental Trust through the OurRiver project, and the federal government through the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority. The raingardens not only beautify the street, they also prevent stormwater pollution from Drew Street entering Cox's Creek and the Cooks River. This reduction in pollution contributes to the achievement of the Strathfield South Subcatchment 2050 community water vision (see below and Click here for more details).

Raingardens

The first raingardens were built in the U.S. state of Maryland in the early 1990s as a way to counteract the erosion, water pollution and flooding caused by stormwater in urban areas. Raingardens are now found throughout many cities and towns around the world. In undeveloped areas like the bush or grassland a slow natural groundwater filtering process takes place. Rainwater slowed by vegetation and rough surfaces flows into low places, where plants soak up and release a small portion of the water back into the atmosphere. The rest slowly percolates through the soil leaving behind any contaminants, feeds into the ground water and eventually into the creeks and rivers. Unfortunately, in urban environments, the water system no longer works this way. Instead after rain, large quantities of stormwater run off, often at great speed from roofs, driveways, footpaths and roads directly into the stormwater drains. The high velocity and large quantity of stormwater causes erosion, water pollution and flooding. Directing stormwater straight into the drains also prevents the rain topping up the ground water levels. Installing raingardens in urban areas allow us to mimic some of the natural filtering system lost through urban development and reduce the negative impacts of stormwater. Raingardens come in many shapes and sizes but all follow the same basic pattern. Stormwater is directed into an artificial pond planted with native species that are adapted to wet conditions. The plants take up some water, while the rest percolates down through several layers of soil, sand and gravel that removes many contaminants from the water before finally entering the groundwater or stormwater system. An additional benefit of raingardens and other methods that increase ground water infiltration is a reduction of the heat island effect that is created in urban environments from large areas of concrete and bitumen. Trees and other vegetation not only cool by shade but water vapour released from pores in their leaves can reduce air temperatures by as much as one to five degrees.

The Cooks River Alliance is a partnership of eight councils – Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville, Strathfield and Rockdale – who are working together with communities for a healthy Cooks River Catchment. The Cooks River is a unique urban waterway located in the inner South West of Sydney. It runs through some of the most heavily urbanised and industrialised areas in Australia, but many parts of the river and its foreshores offer beautiful riverside walkways and cycle paths, wonderful parks and facilities and an abundance of native flora and fauna. Over recent years, the condition of the river has improved considerably, due in large part to the efforts of stakeholders and the local community, however it remains a heavily polluted river with much more to be done.

Hurstville City Council formally endorsed the Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment (Hurstville section) Management Plan on 26 May 2010. The plan includes a concept design for a raingarden and swale in Bundara Reserve (now known as Beverly Hills Park), Beverly Hills. Construction of the Bundara Reserve raingarden and swale was completed in December 2010. The project was funded by Hurstville Council, the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority and the NSW Environmental Trust through the OurRiver project.

Rockdale City Council formally endorsed the Upper Wolli Creek Subcatchment (Rockdale section) Management Plan in April 2010. The plan includes a concept design for a raingarden in Gilchrist Park. Construction of the Gilchrist Park raingarden was completed in March 2011 with funding from Rockdale City Council, and the NSW Environmental Trust through the OurRiver project. Sixty residents and council staff took part in a planting day and opening celebration in March 2011 to bring life to the raingarden and celebrate its official opening.

The Cooks River Alliance aims to work with its member councils, local communities and other stakeholders to continue to the improve the health of the Cooks River catchment. In the past only technical experts have been involved in planning related to urban water management. Community involvement has often been absent, minimal or non-collaborative in its approach. Recent research has shown that increased community involvement is more likely to result in water management solutions that reflect real situations and that represent local ideas, knowledge and values. Some ideas of how you can get involved in helping to improve the health of the Cooks River and its catchment:

Visit the education section of this website for information and resources
Make sure only rainwater enters the stormwater drains (e.g. keep pits and gutters free of leaves, wash your car at a carwash, safely dispose of oils, paints and chemicals - contact your local council to find out how)
Minimise how much water runs off your property (e.g. reduce paved areas, install a rainwater tank). Stormwater run off carries pollution to local waterways
Carry reusable drink containers and shopping bags – plastic bags and bottles are washed into the nearest waterway whenever it rains
Put your rubbish in the bin and pick up after pets - litter and waste will arrive in the nearest waterway via the stormwater drain

Public perception of the Cooks River has changed dramatically over time as urban development has spread and intensified. What was once considered a picnic and boating destination in the 1890s deteriorated to an urban drainage channel in the early 20^th Century, and has since become one of the most polluted rivers in Australia. The tide, however, is turning, and the last 20 to 30 years have seen significant improvements in the water quality of the river, largely due to the efforts of environmental campaigners and local councils. First managers Until 1788, the Cooks River and its environment was relatively undisturbed by man. Prior to European Settlement, the river was part of the area owned by the Cadigal people. This indigenous population used the river by fishing and gathering shellfish but had little impact on the river's natural ecology. In 1770, Captain Cook sailed into Botany Bay and made the first written description of what is thought to be what we now call the Cooks River: "I found a very fine stream of fresh water on the north side in the first sandy cove within the island before which a ship might lay land-locked and wood for fuel may be got everywhere." Early settlements Following European settlement, the first land grants along the river tended to be fairly large and used mostly for grazing and timber with some fishing and lime burning at Botany Bay. In the 1830s a dam was built across the river, however this did not provide a clean water supply and the structure itself began to damage the river's ecology by preventing tidal flushing of deposited urban silt. The Public Health Act of 1848 banned noxious trades from Sydney which resulted in the arrival of many highly-polluting industries in the Cooks River catchment. These included wool washes, tanneries and boiling down works, all of which produced industrial waste pumped directly into the Cooks River. Despite the increasingly doubtful quality of the water, the river remained a popular place in the late nineteenth century for boating, picnics and swimming. By the 1880s tree clearing resulted in erosion, silting and expansion of reed beds, blocking river flow. The dominance of hard engineering By the turn of the 20^th century the river had become an environmental hazard, with sewerage overflows blamed for an outbreak of typhoid amongst the local population. In 1925 a group of concerned citizens formed the Cooks River Improvement League and demanded active efforts be made by the government to clean up the river. Concreting of upper reaches banks began in 1928, followed by the Cooks River Improvement Act (1946) which encouraged steel sheet piling and reclamation of wetlands, and in 1952 construction works for the Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport began which included relocating the river mouth 1.6km west. These engineering efforts took their toll on both the quality of the water and the foreshores themselves. Total Environment Centre report – the Cooks River fights back Following the emergence of the global environmental movement in the late 1960s, in 1976 the Total Environment Centre, an environmental NGO, produced a report entitled Cooks River - Environment Survey and Landscape Design which exposed the extent of the degradation the Cooks River had suffered and laid the foundations for improvements still being undertaken today. Cooks River Foreshores Working Group (CRFWG) and its predecessors In 1991 the NSW Minister for Land and Water Conservation established the Cooks River Catchment Management Committee and in 1993 the local community and Sydney Water began restoration works at Eve Street Wetlands. Footpaths and a cycle track were built to increase recreational usage of the river. In 1996 the State Government committed $2.9 million in funding towards the removal of steel sheet piling along the Cooks River. In 1997 a working party consisting of Marrickville Council, Strathfield Council, Canterbury City Council, the Cooks River Catchment Management Committee (CRCMC), the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Greening Australia and the Department of Land and Water Conservation (DLWC) commissioned and published the Cooks River Foreshores Strategic Plan which was developed as a document which could serve as a management tool for all the councils along the river foreshores, as well as meeting the aspirations of state government bodies and community groups. Following the completion of the Plan, the CRFWG was formed, facilitating and promoting regional collaboration by key stakeholders to establish a more holistic and coordinated approach to the management of the river. The group played a significant role in increasing communication between member councils and state government agencies and successfully initiated and coordinated the submission of numerous grant applications. Over 12 years it grew from a membership of four councils to eight councils and inspired increased community action and financial investment from state agencies. OurRiver Project OurRiver was an initiative of the CRFWG which ran from 2007-2011 with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust’s Urban Sustainability Program. The project trialled an innovative planning model which was undertaken in six subcatchments across eight local government areas and aimed to improve council capacity for Sustainable Urban Water Management (SUWM), increase community capacity and ownership, and to improve the health of the Cooks River. OurRiver created six management plans for the selected subcatchments which involved detailed research into the local social, physical and organisational characteristics. The community used this information to develop visions for water in their local areas, and they were also involved in developing the plans alongside council staff, state government agencies and land owners to achieve these visions. The six subcatchment plans were completed including 100 concept designs for WSUD construction projects such as raingardens and swales, with ten of the projects constructed as part of the project. Other outcomes included increased awareness and understanding of SUWM amongst the community and improved capacity of partner councils to implement SUWM. In addition, the issue of governance as a barrier to SUWM was explored. A catchment governance framework was developed involving council officers, senior management and councillors. It was decided that the most effective way to address regional governance was to develop a Cooks River Alliance – an association of elected councillors that implements a strategic plan for the Cooks River catchment, supported by council staff and dedicated Alliance staff. Cooks River Alliance – new phase, new beginning The Cooks River Alliance (Alliance) was established on 3 May 2011 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the eight founding member councils. The Alliance builds upon previous Cooks River council partnerships and projects.

The Cooks River is a 23 kilometre long urban waterway. The River starts at Graf Park, Yagoona and travels north-west through to Chullora. The River then turns south-west before flowing into Botany Bay at Kyeemagh, next to Kingsford Smith airport. As the River makes its way from Graf Park to Kyeemagh, it is joined by Greenacre Creek, Cox Creek, Cup and Saucer Creek, Wolli Creek, Bardwell Creek, Alexandria Canal (Sheas Creek) and Muddy Creek. The Cooks River catchment is highly urbanised and serves as part of a stormwater system for the 100 square kilometres of watershed. From south Strathfield to Canterbury, the River is a concrete channel and many of its tributaries have also been converted to concrete or brick-lined channels. The shared path and parks along the river are used for recreational activities, and the tidal sections support significant areas of mangroves, salt marsh and bird, and fish life. Wolli Creek flows through important remnant bushland, providing the most significant contiguous wild space in the region.

Path & cycleway

Come and walk or cycle along the historic Cooks River! The Cooks River cycleway runs from Ryde to Botany Bay and is 23km long, although it can be enjoyed in shorter sections.

Why is the Cooks River so degraded?

Almost since the beginning of European settlement, the Cooks River has suffered extreme degradation. Early on the catchment was stripped of natural vegetation and since then sewage, industrial and domestic waste, stormwater pollution and rubbish dumping have caused a severe decline in water quality. Dredging and artificial channel modifications have also severely impacted on the natural landscape of the river. Industrial pollution is no longer allowed to be be pumped into the River, however sewage overflows, rubbish and stormwater runoff continue to severly pollute the River. Further urbanisation compounded by complexities such as catchment size, population dynamics and outmoded stormwater infrastructure continue to frustrate advances in catchment and stormwater management that would greatly improve the environmental and recreational qualities of the River.

Biodiversity "Biological diversity is the variety of all life forms - the different plants, animals and micro organisms, the genes they contain, and the ecosystems of which they form a part" (Commonwealth of Australia 1996). Usually three levels of biodiversity are considered - genetic, species and ecosystem diversity. Genetic diversity refers to the genetic information contained in the genes of all living things. Species diversity refers to the variety of all species. Ecosystem diversity is the variety of habitats, living communities and ecological processes. Bioretention pond A biorentention pond is very similar to a rain garden except that it also collects and ponds stormwater before filtering. A bioretention pond, like a rain garden, is an engineered and landscaped feature often with native plants. Catchment A catchment refers to an area of land which "catches" rainfall that drains to one creek or river system. Catchments provide the source of water for the dams and reservoirs in which our drinking water is collected. Greywater Greywater is waste water from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom (but not the toilet). It usually contains soap, detergents and fats. Gross pollutant trap (GPT) Gross Pollutant Traps, or GPTs, are devices used to prevent large items such as take away containers, leaves, bottles and plastic bags from polluting waterways. GPTs are often used at the end of stormwater drains, to prevent gross pollutants from entering urban waterways, wetlands and beach fronts or used to prevent gross polluntants from exiting industrial areas and getting into the waterways. Pollutants such as dirt, chemicals, heavy metals and bacteria are not directly collected by the GPTs. Groundwater Ground water is water collecting below ground level in an aquifer or water table. Heavy metals This is a general term for cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, manganese, lead, zinc, arsenic and selenium. Heavy metals have ended up in many of our waterways as a result of pollution from industry. Heavy metals even at quite low concentrations, are toxic to most animals and plants. Hydrology Hydrology is the study of water occurrence, distribution, movement and balances in ecosystems; for example the seasonal patterns of a river's flow. Nutrients Nutrients are substances such as nitrogen and phosphorus that are required for the growth of plants. Excess concentrations of these nutrients in rivers, creeks and bays can be harmful because they cause excess growth of aquatic plants such as blue green algae. Rotting blooms of algae produce unpleasant smells affect the taste of water. Additionally some species of blue green algae produce toxins. Algal blooms also have the effect of removing oxygen from water resulting in the death of aquatic fauna such as fish that need oxygen. Overland flow Overland flow is the flow of water over a land surface due to rain. Overland flow generally occurs when the soil is saturated and can no longer hold any more rainwater. Permeable paving Permeable or porous paving allows water to infiltrate into the soil below. There are a number of different types of materials and techniques used to create permeable paving. You can watch a resin-bound permeable paving in action here. Pollution Pollution is the contamination of soil, water, or air by the discharge of waste or other offensive materials. It is the presence of a contaminant to such a degree that the environment (land, water, or air) is not suitable for a particular use. Rain garden A rain garden is a landscaping feature that is planted with native perennial plants and is used to manage stormwater runoff from roofs, foot paths and car parks. A rain garden is constructed with specific soils and plants which allow stormwater to filter through the garden and into the stormwater system at a specific rate and that also filters out pollutants. Run-off Run off is rain or water, which flows from a catchment into a river, stream, lake or reservoir. Sediment Sand, clay, silt, pebbles and organic material deposited in water. Sewage Sewage consists of the waste water from toilets, kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Sewerage The sewerage systems consist of the pipes and fittings carrying sewage. Sewer mining Sewer mining is the capture and transfer of urban wastewater from the sewer network, and its subsequent treatment for reuse, usually as irrigation. There are currently several sewer mines under construction within the Sydney area that will provide irrigation for golf courses. Stormwater Stormwater is rainfall that runs off roofs, roads and other surfaces where it flows into gutters, streams, rivers and creeks, and eventually into the bays. This water can carry contaminants such as plastic bags, detergents, nutrients and heavy metals. Stormwater harvesting This is the capture of stormwater run off for reuse. It is generally on a scale larger than individual properties. Subcatchment A subcatchment is smaller area within a catchment that drains a specific area. Water Cycle The Water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Since the water cycle is truly a "cycle," there is no beginning or end. Water can change states among liquid, vapour, and ice at various places in the water cycle, with these processes happening in the blink of an eye and over millions of years. Although the balance of water on Earth remains fairly constant over time, individual water molecules can come and go in a hurry. (Click here for more information and diagrams) Watershed A watershed is the total land area that contributes water to a river, stream, lake or other body of water. Watershed is synonymous with drainage area, drainage basin and catchment. Watertable The watertable is the upper surface of groundwater. The soil is fully saturated below the watertable and unsaturated above it. Wetland Low-lying areas of land occasionally or permanently covered with either fresh or salt water. Wetlands can occur naturally and or they can be constructed.

The new Cooks River Alliance was launched in September 2011 by eight councils in the Cooks River Catchment – Strathfield, plus Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville and Rockdale. The Alliance employs a small team with the aim of effectively addressing the complex problems of the Cooks River in the long term, whilst maximizing the efficient use of member councils’ limited resources. Alliance activities will include – actively engaging with people living and working in the Cooks River Catchment, monitoring water quality, seeking funding from government and private organisations for catchment projects and managing the construction of on-ground works, and advocating and lobbying for legislative amendments to help improve the health of the catchment.

Previous Projects in the Cooks River

Prior to the formation of the Cooks River Alliance, a number of projects were undertaken to improve the health of the Cooks River catchment. A key example is the the OurRiver project - the Cooks River Sustainability Initiative (OurRiver) was an initiative of the Cooks River Foreshores Working Group (CRFWG). OurRiver was a partnership between Ashfield, Bankstown City, City of Sydney, City of Canterbury, Hurstville City, Marrickville, Rockdale City and Strathfield councils, and Monash University. The project ran from 2007 to 2011 and was funded by the NSW Environmental Trust’s Urban Sustainability Program. OurRiver trialled an innovative planning model based on Marrickville Council’s award-winning Urban Stormwater Integrated Management (USWIM) project. The project was undertaken in six subcatchments across eight local government areas (LGAs) - please see below management plans for the six OurRiver project areas (known as subcatchment management plans). First Riverhealth Monitoring Volunteers' Day

19 November 2011 - A dozen volunteers took part in the first Riverhealth monitoring volunteers' event on a sunny Saturday morning at Coolibah Reserve in Rockdale. The award winning Riverhealth project was initiated in 2009 by the Georges River Combined Councils’ Committee (GRCCC) and initially covered the Georges River catchment. Due to its success, the second phase of the project is now expanding to include the Cooks River, in partnership with the new Cooks River Alliance. Enthusiastic Rivehealth volunteers were taught by our scientist Claire Evans how to sample aquatic macroinvertebrates (a fancy name for waterbugs!), how to identify these critters and interpret the data to assess just how healthy our creeks and rivers are. The data collected will be extremely valuable as it will help us assess the ecological health of the Cooks River and identify areas where further investigation and remediation are required. Claire will also be collecting data at other locations throughout the Cooks River which will form part of a 'report card' on the health of the Cooks River which will be published on our website in September 2012. 16 March 2012 - The Cooks River Alliance invites all Sydney residents to help give the Cooks River a health check. Working alongside scientists, volunteers will collect data to contribute to the long-term sustainable management of the Cooks River. We will train you to collect and identify macroinvertebrates (waterbugs) in creeks and tributaries of the Cooks River. Cooks River Alliance Board Calls for Container Deposit Legislation

12 June 2012 - Cooks River Alliance Board members have voted unanimously to call for the introduction of container deposit legislation in NSW. At their quarterly meeting the Board, consisting of councillors from the eight Alliance member councils, acknowledged the enormous impact of pollution on the health of the Cooks River and its catchment, in particular their concern regarding the number of beverage containers which collect on the banks and in the river itself. On 12 July 2013 Roger Cameron of Marrickville came across a terrible pollution event at Cup and Saucer Creek on the Cooks River. He took photos and reported it to the City of Canterbury, who engaged NSW Fire and Rescue to attempt a clean up. Sydney Water is testing the pollutant. The Cooks River Alliance River Health Monitoring program runs two community sampling days each spring and autumn. The recent high intensity rainfall has increased turbidity and sediment in the creek. The Autumn Community Sampling Day in Rockdale, which was to be held on Sunday 30 March, will now be held on Saturday 3^rd May, 2014. If you have already registered, you will be contacted by Cooks River Alliance. Scientific advice is to wait at least one week after major rainfall to make measurements in more average conditions. The photo below depicts the effect of recent high intensity rainfalls on Bardwell Creek. Photo by Carl Tippler. Community members are invited to join the program under the supervision of Carl Tippler, an aquatic ecologist who has detailed experience monitoring the Botany Bay catchment (Georges and Cooks Rivers). The Bushland Officer at Rockdale has a wealth of knowledge about local conditions and actions taken to protect our creeks and waterways. Community sampling days are an opportunity to understand more about the local biodiversity as well as undertake sampling for macro-invertebrates and physio-chemical indicators. The information gathered by community members contributes to the River Health Monitoring Report Card. Children are welcome if accompanied by responsible adult. The Cooks River Alliance is a group of eight councils dedicated to improving the quality of the Cooks River and includes: Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville, Rockdale and Strathfield. Seeking Community Representatives to join the Cooks River Alliance

The Cooks River Alliance is seeking three volunteer Community Representatives to join the Alliance Board. Application information is available here. “The Cooks River is one of the most important waterways in Sydney, and the Alliance is committed to working with the local communities to restore the health of the river,” Alliance Chair and Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Brian Robson said. “The Alliance Board currently has three Community Representative vacancies, so I encourage all residents in the Cooks River Catchment who are passionate about bringing our river back to life to express their interest in joining the Cooks River Alliance Board.” The Alliance Board is made up of one councillor from each member council. The founding members of the Cooks River Alliance are: Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville, Rockdale and Strathfield. The Alliance combines and builds resources, experience, knowledge and skills within councils and communities, to work on complex environmental challenges. Community Representatives will have the opportunity to contribute to the direction of the Alliance, and provide local resident perspectives. All residents interested in the Cooks River are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who live in one of the eight member council areas. Community Representatives will attend four meetings per year, held on weekday evenings at locations across the Cooks River Catchment. Entries are now open for the sixth annual GreenWay Art Exhibition! The 2015 Cooks River Small Sculpture Prize ($2000) is open to all artists, anywhere in Australia or abroad, established or emerging, represented or unrepresented. Artworks will be selected based on their relevance to the GreenWay and Cooks River themes of urban environments and waterways, community connections and/or sustainable transport. Entries close 5pm on Thursday 22 October, 2015.
